Using Vinegar for Green Cleaning!

Green Cleaning with Vinegar!
(...and other around the house items!!)

White distilled vinegar is a popular household cleanser, effective for killing most mold, bacteria, and germs, due to its level of acidity. Cleaning with white distilled vinegar is a smart way to avoid using harsh chemicals. You’ll also be glad to know that it is environmentally friendly and very economical.

A few things around my home that I use distilled white vinegar to clean:

Clean and deodorize drains: Pour 1 cup baking soda, then one cup hot white distilled vinegar. Let this sit for 5 minutes or so, then run hot water down the drain.

Deodorize the garbage disposal: Pour 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup hot white distilled vinegar in disposal. Let sit for 5 minutes then run hot water down the disposal.  To clean the garbage disposal:  Use white distilled vinegar ice cubes. Make them by freezing full-strength white distilled vinegar in an ice cube tray. Run several cubes down the disposal while flushing with cold water.

Clean the microwave: Mix 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar and 1/2 cup water in a microwave-safe bowl. Bring it to a rolling boil inside the microwave. Baked-on food will be loosened, and odors will disappear. Wipe clean.
Grease splattered oven door window: Saturate it with full-strength white distilled vinegar. Keep the door open for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping with a sponge.

Soap buildup and odors from the dishwasher: Pour a cup of white distilled vinegar inside the empty machine and run it through a whole cycle. Do monthly.

Mineral deposits from coffee makers: Fill the water reservoir with 1 cup or more of white distilled vinegar and run it through a whole cycle. Run it once or twice more with plain water to rinse clean. (Check the owners’ manual first.)
Get rid of fruit flies: Set out a small dish of undiluted white distilled vinegar.

Cleaning the grill easier:  Spray a solution of half water and half white distilled vinegar on the cooking surface.  Clean your grill: Spritz white distilled vinegar over wadded up aluminum foil and scrubbing the grill vigorously with it.

Remove a label, decal, or price tag: Cover with a cloth soaked in white distilled vinegar. Leave the cloth on overnight and the label should slide off.
Kill germs all around the bathroom: Spray of full-strength white distilled vinegar. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Remove grime, mildew, and scum from the tub, tile, shower curtain or door, wipe with undiluted white distilled vinegar. Rinse with water. Spray shower doors with full-strength white distilled vinegar after you’ve squeegeed the glass, or before you step in and turn on the water. It will help release the hard water deposits so they don’t remain on the glass.  Get rid of stubborn bathtub film by wiping it with white distilled vinegar and then scouring with baking soda.  Clean a scummy showerhead, pour 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup white distilled vinegar into a sandwich bag and tie it around the showerhead. Let this set for an hour after the bubbling has stopped. Remove the bag and then turn on the water. Deodorize the toilet bowl: allow 3 cups white distilled vinegar to sit in it for about a half hour before flushing.

Thanks, Vinegar Tips  for helping me to become a more economical and environmentally friendly cleaner!

BZZREVIEW - Green Mountain Cofee® Fair Trade Certified™!

BZZREVIEW:

Green Mountain Coffee® Fair Trade Certified!

Green Mountain Coffee(R) Fair Trade Certified(TM)

October is Fair Trade Month!

Hhhmm...what is Fair Trade?  The United States consumes one-fifth of all the world's coffee, making it the largest consumer in the world. But few Americans realize that agriculture workers in the coffee industry often toil in what can be described as "sweatshops in the fields." Many small coffee farmers receive prices for their coffee that are less than the costs of production, forcing them into a cycle of poverty and debt.

What is the history of Fair Trade? The Fair Trade movement began in the late 1950s as alternative trade organizations (ATOs) emerged in Europe and the US to promote grassroots development through direct, equitable trade. These ATOs bought directly from Third World producers, eliminating the middlemen, and paid the producers a fair price while providing assistance in developing trading experience and market contacts. Such experiences helped producers raise their incomes while reducing their dependency on commercial middlemen. These first ATOs were primarily "Third World shops" which dealt mainly in handicrafts. Today, there are 3,000 of these shops in Europe organized in the Network of European World Shops, and about 100 in the US, organized in the Fair Trade Federation.

How did Fair Trade Coffee in the U.S. get started? In 1986, Equal Exchange was established to import Nicaraguan coffee as an expression of solidarity with the people and revolution of Nicaragua, after the Reagan administration imposed an unfair trade embargo. Equal Exchange became the only ATO in the US to focus exclusively on Fair Trade coffee, trading according to the international standards before there was a monitoring agency in the US. In the fourteen years since its inception, Equal Exchange has built a small but important niche for Fair Trade coffee, earning the respect and recognition of the specialty coffee industry and helping many farmers to keep their land during the low ebbs in the world coffee market. Other companies such as Peace Coffee in Minneapolis, Zapatista Coffee in Denver, Café Mam in Oregon, Café Campesino in Georgia, and Dean's Beans in Massachusetts have also been active promoting fair prices for farmers over the last five years, as well as promoting education about the coffee industry and the need for Fair Trade.

As a BzzAgent I received I received several FREE samples of Green Mountain Fair Trade Certified Three Continent Blend K-Cups to review.  This was a great tasting cup of coffee that will give you a whole new perspective of your daily cup of java! It's a moment to pause, reflect, and reprioritize.  From carefully sourcing and roasting the highest quality beans, to supporting small farms and protecting the environment, Green Mountain Coffee focus' on what's important...an awesome great cup of coffee that will change your day...but a great cup of coffee can help change the world!

UPDATE FROM THE HUSBAND!  "I always appreciate it when k-cups are light or medium roast but also Extra Bold, as this one is. Three Continents is a really interesting blend. It's smooth and bright, with surprising floral hints, tones of fruitiness, and a touch of earthiness. It's wonderful! I wouldn't expect to have so many flavors in one coffee!"

7 Coupon Myths!

Couponing is a simple and lets be honest, an amazing concept. But these common myths can keep people from saving big. Don’t let these myths keep you or your friends from scoring a deal.

Coupon Money - Zorani
MYTH #1: Coupons don’t save that much money.

You may not save hundreds on one trip to the store, but saving a few bucks here and there adds up over time. A recent release from Savings.com and Valpak found that couponing can save as much as $10,000 annually.

MYTH #2: Only moms use coupons.

Though the average coupon user tends to be a 25-44 year-old female with younger children, they are not the only ones who save. A 2012 NCH survey found that 92% of 18-22 year olds use and 88% of males use coupons.

MYTH #3: You save more money at a warehouse than with coupons.

Warehouse Stores are great for buying and saving in bulk, but what if you don’t have room to store 50 rolls of toilet paper? Also, it may not save as much as you think. A 20-pack of toilet paper at Costco breaks down to about 96¢ per roll. But a 6-pack at Walmart combined with a typical 50¢-off coupon ends up being 91¢ per roll, saving you money and space at home.

MYTH #4: You can only find coupons for food.

While grocery stores and restaurants are most likely to dish out deals, you can still save on apparel, accessories and more. Use a site like RetailMeNot to download deals on your need-to-have items.

MYTH #5: Coupons expire too fast.

In 2012, the average expiration date was over 2 months after distribution. That’s plenty of time to stock up and save. If, however, you forget to use them before the highlighted date, donate them to the Support Our Troops Troopons(R) Program, which sends coupons to overseas military families. Since overseas military bases accept expired coupons, the savings still go to use.

MYTH #6: Using coupons means the store loses money.

In reality, stores make money when you use a coupon. In addition to reimbursing the grocer for the coupon amount, manufactures pay an $0.08 handling fee per coupon.

MYTH #7: People hate couponers.

While no one likes the woman (or man) who takes too long at the register, following a few rules could save yourself from the evil stares before check out (or better yet, before you leave the house), organize your coupons. If you have a lot of coupons, tell the cashier as well as the other customers so they can find a quicker line. They will be happy that you saved them time, and you’ll be happy that you saved some money!

BZZREVIEW: Hormel Rev Wraps!

BZZREVIEW

Hormel Rev Wraps!

So where do you find HORMEL® REV® wraps? All you have to do is find the meat case at your local grocery store. No, they won’t be with the frozen pizzas and French fries — look for them by the pre-made sandwiches and lunches.

Varities:

HORMEL® REV® wraps – available in eight delicious, teen-approved varieties – give teens the satisfying real energy they need to fuel their relentless drive:
  • Pepperoni pizza: pepperoni, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese in a soft white wrap.
  • Italian: pepperoni, genoa salami and mozzarella cheese in an Italian herb wrap.
  • Spicy Italian: spicy salami and mozzarella cheese in an Italian herb wrap.
  • Meat lovers pizza: pepperoni, spicy salami, genoa salami, sopressata and mozzarella cheese in a soft white wrap.
  • Italian ham & mozzarella: smoked ham and mozzarella cheese in an Italian herb wrap.
  • Ham & cheese: ham and Cheddar cheese in a soft white wrap.
  • Pepper Jack & ham: ham and pepper jack cheese in a soft white wrap.
  • Peppered turkey & mozzarella: peppered turkey and Pepper Jack cheese in an Italian herb wrap.

Opinion:

As part of my latest BzzAgent.com campaign, I picked up Rev Wraps for the kiddos to try as an after-school snack. As we are a super duper busy family, I had them ready to go when they came home from school. They have either practice, a game, or a competition after school everyday:

        * My 15 year old daughter: high school volleyball five times per week
        * My 11 year old daughter: cheer practice four times per week
        * My 10 year old daughter: baton twirling two time per week
        * My 8 year old son: baseball four times per week

They typically don’t return home until between 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm, depending on when practice, the game, or the competition ends. That means – four EXTREMELY 'starving' kids by the time dinner rolls around!  I decided to give then the Rev Wraps instead of a tiny granola bar as their after-school snack because I was hoping it would help give them extra energy! AND keep them fuller... longer. Well, to my joyous surprise...It worked! They only came home stating they were 'pretty hungry'...but not starving, mind you! That is a foodie success in our house! Each of them commented on how they loved it and they hope I’ll get them from now on!

Hormel REV Wraps for $1.28 at Walmart

UPDATE (10/14/2013): Hormel RevWraps are still a success in our house! The convenience for my on-the-go kids is awesome! They just grab one from the fridge and go! I purchase them at Fry's Marketplace (a Kroger affiliate)! Go ahead, try 'em just once....your kiddos will be happy you did and you will be going back for more! Cheers ~ Jen

*3.5g total fat per serving
**Not a significant source of protein (5% daily value per serving)
***Recommended to consume at least 48 grams of whole grain each day

Opinion:

I was sent the Sea Salt & Olive Oil Kashi Hummus Crisps from BzzAgent to try for free. The following is my personal opinion of this product.

These crisps are very light and 'airy'. The flavor is good, but it does seem to be missing more of a 'hummus' flavor.  I can taste the chickpeas, seat salt and Kashi 7-grain taste. I do feel that the parsley- adds a nice depth to the flavor without being overwhelmingly salty.

The 'hubs' practically devoured the whole bag...bag and all! We both loved the crispness, the flavor and best of all...it was not greasy! It is a great 'chip' I have no problem serving to my family as a snack, with meals or in their school lunches!

Highly recommend!

10/15/2013 UPDATE:  The kids LOVE the Sundried Tomato, Basil & Feta variety. I have purchased several bags of both flavors and I can't keep it in the house! Between packing some in school and work lunches everyday and for an after school snack...these delicious and healthy crisps are gone in the blink of an eye! An it makes me so happy to know I am feeding my family a healthy 'chip'! So go ahead, try it for you and your family! Cheers! ~ Jen

Healthy Snack for the Kids!

FAGE GREEK YOGURT!
(Pronounced FA-YEH)

Upon founding FAGE in 1926, the Filippou family made a declaration: “We would never make a product that we would not give to our children.” Nearly one hundred years later, having gone from a small shop in Athens to distributing their famed yogurt worldwide, that motto remains as true today as it did on the very first day of business.

Like the family motto they hold dear, FAGE Total continues to follow the original recipe, which includes only two or three ingredients; milk and live active cultures or milk, live active cultures and cream. What’s included in FAGE Total is as important as what’s missing: no sweeteners, no thickeners and no powders. This approach of fresh ingredients and simple preparation, in combination with its extraordinary taste and creamy texture, has made FAGE Total the number one yogurt in Greece.

The rich texture and full taste of FAGE Total makes it an incredibly versatile ingredient to have in your kitchen. Add fresh fruit for a perfect mid-day snack or a dash of honey for an indulgent dessert. FAGE Total is low in calories and fat, making it a perfect substitute for cream, mayonnaise and sour cream in many dishes.

Because it is rich in protein, FAGE Total is easy to enjoy at any time of day as a healthy part of your daily diet. Visit FAGE for a variety of exciting ways to incorporate FAGE Total into your diet.

List of 150 Manufacturers to Contact for Coupons!

One of my favorite ways to get high-value and sometimes even FREE item coupons is e-mailing manufacturers. It is very simple and doesn’t take a whole lot of your time. The below list of companies have been known to send out coupons to consumers who contact them. All you need to do is go to the links included below and send the manufacturer a little note.

Not sure what to say when you contact them?
Most of the time I just let them know that I like their product, sometimes I’ll give them a suggestion on how they could potentially improve their product, and other times I’ll ask if they are willing to send me a coupon so I can try/continue to use their product. If I have not tried their product before, I’ll let them know that I would like to. It doesn’t have to be anything long or fancy. Just keep it simple and do not forget to include your mailing information if you have an opportunity to do so.
I challenge all of you to get as far through this list as possible…even if it takes you a month or two or three. I promise, it will pay off! In a week or two, you’ll be running to the mailbox instead of walking!

Make sure to come back here and leave a comment when you start getting your coupons!

Important Note
Please make sure to keep in mind that sometimes manufacturers will give out a certain amount of coupons for a specific time period. If you hear back from them and they say that they are not giving out coupons at this time, it is still worth checking again in a few months. ;) I VERY highly encourage you to also e-mail brands that are not on this list. Take a look through your cabinets to get some ideas of the brands your family purchases often.

Kroger offers the delicious yogurts you and your loved ones crave. For those watching their carb intake, CARBmaster is a yogurt lover’s dream. It’s formulated to be lower in carbs, calories and sugar than regular yogurt — and it still tastes great! With decadent flavors like Black Forest Cake and Cinnamon Roll, CARBmaster cultured dairy blends make for a guilt-free dessert any day.

If you’re looking for a tangier treat, try Kroger Greek or New Greek Lite yogurt. Intro Post

These are the things I will be sharing on this new blog.

How do you coupon?

Before Extreme Couponing......Have you heard about Jill Cataldo?
I highly recommend watching this clip.  You will clearly see the difference between the two shoppers.  Be sure to notice the different items in each cart.  I am in no way an 'Extreme' couponer or a 'Shelf-Clearer'.  I shop like Jill with coupons!  Who do you shop like??
